Chastain, who led for only four laps, got an assist from Grant Enfinger on the final lap to win the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 in double overtime at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday night.
Christian Eckes, Chastain and John Hunter Nemechek were running about evenly high, in the middle and down low, before Eckes fell back when Enfinger appeared on the outside, pushing Chastain into the lead, which he held down the stretch to win. Chastain’s truck looked somewhat unstable down the stretch.
Chastain, Hocevar’s teammate at Niece Motorsport, said, “I hate it so much for Carson. I didn’t give him the push he needed.
“I’ll keep saying that. He’s a future star. He’s so goofy, but I love him. He learns so fast.”
Enfinger took second place, Nemechek third, Eckes fourth, and Zane Smith, who won Stage 1, fifth.
Stage 2 was won by Ben Rhodes
In the first overtime, Carson Hocevar wrecked after touching trucks with Ryan Preece while racing for the lead and finished 16th. Preece pitted with a flat tire after 57 laps of racing.
The 19-year-old Hocevar acknowledged his dumbass move.
