A real golf enthusiast, Canelo Alvarez has improved his handicap to an eight in recent years.
While he is far from his boxing skills, the Mexican is making great progress based on the number of hours he plays, which he has acknowledged.
With a score of 31 years old, the Jalisco native has participated in several pro-am tournaments on the PGA Tour calendar (the American golf circuit) and has also competed in the Icons Series. During the United States match, Pep Guardiola, Harry Kane, and Ash Barty competed against illustrious athletes such as Michael Phelps and Ben Roethlisberger as part of the international team.
The Mexican uses the sport as a way to disconnect, but critics have labeled it an addiction and blamed it for his last loss to Dmitry Bivol.
According to the AP, he stated, “I lost because that’s the way things are, not because of golf or anything else.”
There’s still some other reason, but I don’t want to make excuses.
“I was already practicing golf three years ago and became undisputed super middle champion, so this cannot be the reason.
During a fight, my body responds normally because I am 100 percent focused on my goals.”
Canelo Alvarez’s love of golf
This weekend, the super middleweight champion will face Gennady Golovkin for the third time.
“It’s a challenging sport where patience and mental strength are required,” he said.
“It has helped me develop patience, it makes you challenge yourself, it is a sport that has helped me both personally and professionally.
After playing for so many hours, I go home relaxed. It is an addictive sport.”
Canelo Alvarez’s English is improved by golf
According to him, golf has also helped him improve his English, as the Mexican was previously very reserved when it came to answering questions in English.
I tried to learn English for a month, but I didn’t succeed,” he said.
But I always practice with my golf friends. I speak a lot of English when I’m there.
