In the United States, Martina Navratilova was diagnosed with breast and throat cancer.
According to The Times, the tennis legend overcame breast cancer 13 years ago with radiotherapy, but she is facing yet more complications.
In a statement, Navratilova said: “I will fight this with all my might.”.
While she no longer participates in the veterans’ competitions, the 18 Grand Slam singles champion is an ambassador for the women’s tour.
She had planned to travel to Melbourne to commentate for one of the television rights holders on the Australian Open (January 16 to January 29).
Navratilova is expected to begin treatment for a disease affecting the women’s circuit this January, according to a spokeswoman for the tennis player.
Women with multiple cases
Carla Suarez recently overcame Hodgkin’s lymphoma, as did Chris Evert, Martina’s rival on the courts.
It was also the Colombian Catalina Castano, the Italian Francesca Schiavone, the Americans Nicole Gibbs and Vicky Duval, and the Russian Alysa Kleibanova who overcame the disease.
